Guidelines for Display of Flags in the Johnson Center during International Week 2024:

During International Week each spring, George Mason University displays flags in the Johnson Center to recognize and honor international students, those who come to the United States, and Mason for the specific purpose of furthering their education.  The University hangs the flags of all enrolled international (non-immigrant) students.  This advances Mason’s mission and vision of being a “university for the world.” Mason uses this opportunity to honor international students as vital members of an inclusive and diverse campus community.

For the sole purpose of this policy, international students are those in non-immigrant F or J status.  The country of each student is defined by the U.S. Department of State in the citizenship field of the visa certificate of eligibility (I-20 or DS-2019).  International student enrollment for each year is determined by the University’s fall census.

The U.S. flag is displayed during International Week and always hangs in the first position. The order of all other flags changes each year based on alphabetical rotation.
